The Program

Support & Community

Becoming a School Leader
During the second half of the Residency year, New Leaders Residents - with support and assistance from local program staff - seek to identify and secure school leadership positions within New Leaders' partner districts. Most New Leaders are appointed to positions at existing district or charter schools; other New Leaders become founding principals of brand-new district or charter schools - often of their own design. Once a New Leader becomes a principal, he or she has access to a wide range of supports - aligned with New Leaders' Urban Excellence FrameworkTM, facilitated by content experts, and drawing from the expertise within the New Leaders Community - that guide the continued development of their key personal leadership qualities and the implementation of school-wide practices that will ultimately lead to dramatic student achievement gains. Our ultimate goal is for every New Leaders principal to become a highly effective school leader who builds and sustains a school that promotes high expectations and delivers high levels of student achievement - and that equips every student with the academic and personal skills needed to graduate from high school ready for success in college, careers, and citizenship.

Beyond the First Year: The New Leaders Community and Ongoing Support
Every New Leader becomes a lifelong member of a national network of educators who are deeply committed to promoting excellence within their school and district as well as nationwide. Within each program city, New Leaders are part of an active community of like-minded leaders who share effective practices and support one another's personal and professional development. Through city program offices, New Leaders have access to ongoing professional development workshops, consultations with expert staff, opportunities to participate in small-group learning and leadership development experiences, and invitations to networking and social events. New Leaders also have access to high-quality, nationally-provided resources including the Urban Excellence FrameworkTM Field Guide; UEF-aligned tools, artifacts, and resources; school-wide diagnostic tools and action planning frameworks; online access to key Foundations curriculum and course materials; and invitations to periodic national professional development events. In addition, every New Leader has access to the Effective Practice Online Community (EPIC), which features case studies, practice profiles, and artifacts from schools across the country that have demonstrated significant achievement gains.

EPIC – The Effective Practice Incentive Community
Schools in cities across the nation share many similar challenges. EPIC provides New Leaders for New Schools and our partners the opportunity to learn from educators driving achievement gains in high-need urban schools. EPIC identifies school leaders and teachers driving student achievement gains and financially rewards these educators in exchange for sharing their effective practices that helped lead to the gains.
