Our Schools

New Leaders for New Schools Milwaukee has partnered closely with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) since 2006 to dramatically increase student achievement in Milwaukee by preparing and supporting a new generation of outstanding school leaders. MPS is the 27th largest school district in the nation, with 213 schools and over 85,000 students from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Although MPS has shown progress across a number of measures over the past 3 years, it must, like many urban school districts, confront the urgent fact that the majority of its students are not achieving the knowledge and skills they will need to fully participate and compete in today's global economy:

  • 4 in 10 fourth graders are not proficient in reading.*
  • 6 in 10 eighth graders are not proficient in math.*
  • 6 in 10 tenth graders are not proficient in reading; 7 in 10 tenth graders are not proficient in math.*
  • MPS has been identified as a Level 3 school district in need of improvement after missing AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for four consecutive years in reading and mathematics.[pdf]
